June 26/19

Dear Families,

It's so hard to believe that we are now officially done this school year!  Div. 9 has had lot of fun, adventures and learned so much.  Your child brought home their memory books today. Please take some time to go through all the pages, the class was very excited this morning looking through and reminiscing everything we had done this year.  They especially enjoyed looking at the collages and making their own photo page!   Just another reminder that their flower painting is just placed  (not hole-punched) at the back of their memory book in case you'd like to frame it.

FYI - Your child will have access to Raz Kids over the summer to continue to practice and strengthen their reading skills.  I believe they also will still be able to go on IXL as well as the other links that are on this blog.

I have thoroughly enjoyed being your child's teacher this year and want to thank you for your support and assistance.  Hope you all have a wonderful summer!

Sheralyn Rowledge-Toscani

I'd also like to thank everyone for their kind words and gifts.  I really appreciate your thoughtfulness!

June 19/19

Dear Families,

I can't believe that this is our last full week and our year together is coming to an end.  I have thoroughly enjoyed having your children in our class and thank you so much for your help and support this year.

Ms. Neufeld came in this afternoon and we finished our Connection unit.  She read the students a great story about Connections, then we did friend Venn Diagrams and built lego bridges!

Here are some last minute reminders of our last few days...

*Disco bowling is tomorrow - please remember to send boosters (unless your child is 9).  Thanks to the parents who volunteered to drive and to Mrs. Roberts parents who are helping us out.

*Fariview Fun Day is on Friday starting at 11.  Your child should come to school prepared for the weather and some water fun (please send a labeled towel just in case).  There will be some treats but please still send some healthy snacks/lunch and water bottle.  Also wear sunscreen as they will be outside from 11-2.  Thanks again to our PAC for providing us with this awesome day!!

*SPCA - *Our community goal this year is to help animals at our local SPCA.  We are encouraging families to send in old towels, blankets etc. for the animals at the shelter.  Pet food and other animal toys/treats/leashes etc. are also welcome.  Thank you in advance for your support for this great cause, please send in by Monday.

*Thanks to Stephen and Colton's moms for washing some bins of manipulatives for Div. 9.  There are still lots more to clean so if anyone else could take a bin or two home it really helps with my clean-up.   Please and Thank You!

Thanks to Rhys' mom for helping out with our wrap and smoothie bar!  The student seemed to really enjoy it!

Your child will bring home their Growthfolio tomorrow.  Please take the time to go through and read this - in the June section we have added their latest writing and math, their competency self-assessment (which is part of their report card) as well as their Music assessment, Dr. Saul's letter and an ELL report if your child is receiving this service.  The purpose of this growth folio is to illustrate the growth your child has made this year.

Please send in a labelled plastic or cloth bag to bring home your child's stuff.  I will be sending home duotangs/supplies over the next few days and this will make organizing them easier.  Thanks.
Final class celebration is next Tuesday, June 25th in the afternoon - thanks in advance to Cam - fruit plate, Colton - Veggies, Alicia - Sweet Treat, Will - Popcorn/chips or Pretzels, Saskia - Other!

Please check your homes for any classroom books and return them by Friday.  I will be collecting all mystery bags and any other classroom books.  Thursday will be the last day they are signing out books.

Also please see the blog from last week in regards to school supplies for next year.

Thanks again for the great year!  Hope you all have a fun-filled summer!

June 13/19

*National Indigenous Day is on Friday.  Please ensure your child is dressed for the weather and also that they wear older clothes as one of the stations is painting with acrylic paint!  PLEASE NOTE THERE WILL BE NO FAMILY READING THIS WEEK as we have an assembly to start our special day.  Students also do not need to bring their planners or book bags.  Lunch is provided but still send snacks.

Rev's Bowling is next Thursday afternoon.  Please sign up asap and if anyone else can drive that would be great as we are still short drivers.

Our final class celebration will be on Tuesday, June 25 in the afternoon.  Thanks in advance to Cam - fruit plate, Colton - Veggies, Alicia - Sweet Treat, Will - Popcorn/chips or Pretzels, Saskia - Other!

We are doing our next 'Nutrition Activity' next Wednesday, June 19th between recess 10:30 and lunch 12:00. We are looking for volunteers to help smoothies and help out with our wrap bar, please let me know if you can help out.  Thanks in advance!

*Our community goal this year is to help animals at our local SPCA.  We are encouraging families to send in old towels, blankets etc. for the animals at the shelter.  Pet food and other animal toys/treats/leashes etc. are also welcome.  Thank you in advance for your support of this great cause.

Father's Day cards and gifts were sent home today.  Hope you love your gifts as much as the children enjoyed making them!

If anyone is able to wash some class Manipulatives that would be really appreciated.  You could take home a bin or two and return them the next day. Thank you in advance.

We have sent home the notices for Creative Packs for school supplies.  The primary team cannot stress enough the importance of using Creative Packs!  We ask for certain brands of school supplies because they are what we have determined are the best quality and last the whole school year.  If you choose to not order Creative Packs, then please follow the list given supply for supply.  If you are missing something in September we will highlight on our list as a reminder of what else to get.  Please do not buy Dollar Store brand supplies!!! They may be the cheap option, but the glue doesn’t stick, the crayons don’t colour and the scissors don’t cut!  Us primary teachers know from experience.  If you have financial concerns about school supplies and meeting the required lists, please don’t hesitate to contact Mrs. Watkins.

June 7/19

At our last assembly Fairview all 'ROCKED' the Bhangra dance!

School Supply order forms should be returned.  We are encouraging all parents to purchase these.  In the past some parents have chosen to get their supplies at a Dollarstore but that makes the supplies different and more important often a cheaper quality that does not last.
Your child has brought home a couple of blank duotangs earlier this week.  Please check your child's backpack for these and safe for next year.

Yesterday we had an amazing afternoon of soapstone carving!

Oliver Harwood is a Canadian artist that came to show us how to carve a variety of different animals out of soapstone.  The students were so engaged carving for over an hour!  He also shared one of his recent carvings that is in New Brunswick which was called 'Song of the Deep'.  The link to see this and several other of his sculptures is St Andrews Sculpture by Oliver Harwood

Many students have not yet brought in a rock.  Please do so by Tuesday.  Thanks

Rev.'s bowling - please be sure to sign up and send in the money as soon as possible.  We are still short a couple spots for driving but Mrs. Roberts has extra spots so we should be good.  Thanks everyone for your help with driving for field trips this year.

Class photos went home this week.  Orders for extra pictures need to be in by Tuesday, June 11.

Next Friday is National Aboriginal Day.  The students will be going to a variety of stations throughout the day.  We are very excited!

May 29/19

A huge thank you to Laura, Will's mom who came in last Friday to teach us how to draw and paint Georgia O'Keeve flowers.  Don't they all look amazing!

Last hot lunch of the year is tomorrow, Thursday, May 30th!

Just a reminder that your child brought home their Food For Us! books.  They had homework planning and/or just recording a meal and identifying if it is balanced with the four food groups.
They do not need to bring this back back it is important that they share and review their knowledge on such an important life-long concept.

Spelling is over for the year.  Students have brought home their duotangs and can keep them at home.  For extra practice at home remember to check the blog and go on Spelling City.

Library Raffle tickets need to returned by next week.  If you feel you could sell more please let me know as the more we sell the better. Please return any tickets you do not sell.  Thanks to families that have already returned their tickets.

Parent volunteer tea invitations went home earlier this week, if I missed anyone please let me know - your time and support is really appreciated!!

We were fortunate to receive a food grant so have planned a Yogurt Bar/Magic School Bus Movie on Friday morning after recess.  I do have a couple volunteers (thanks to Rhys and Kamryn's moms) but if anyone else could help out that would speed up the process!

Thank you to the PAC and parents who contributed for the wonderful Staff Appreciation Luncheon on Tuesday.  It was really appreciated by all.

Field Trip to Rev's Bowling is now up on the portal.  It is Thursday, June 20th in the afternoon.  We do need parent drivers.

May 23/19

Class photos are tomorrow morning.  Tomorrow will be the last day for students to take out library books.

Our scientists of the day are going very well - thank you so much for your help with these projects.  The students are loving them and learning lots!

Your child should be practicing the poem that is in their Mystery Bags (some won't be receiving their poem until next week though)  They will be presenting these to the class with their groups.  Mystery Bags were changed today unless your child wanted to keep theirs.

Also please check the backpacks for their FOOD FOR US! books tomorrow.  We have gone through these learning about nutritious foods, the 4 food groups (even though they have changed the Canada Food Guide has changed this year, it is still important the children learn the different groups and the importance of balanced meals and healthy snacks).  They have already analyzed their lunch one day and the last page of the book is another lunch they could plan and make sure is a balanced meal!  Please do this at home and review with your child, if you'd rather do a breakfast or supper that's fine too.  They do not need to return this to school but completing this last page is important and is homework. Thanks for your help with this!

Love Your Library Raffle tickets went home last week.  Hopefully you can sell these tickets and return the stubs and the money asap.  If you are unable to sell them please return the tickets so we can sell them to someone else.  Thanks for your support with our library!

Rocks!!  Each student is asked to bring in a rock - BIGGER THAN THEIR FIST BUT SMALLER THAN THEIR HEAD! (LOL)  They will be drawing and writing a word on these rocks as part of our connection unit.

CLASS PHOTOS HAVE BEEN RESCHEDULED TO FRIDAY, MAY 24TH!  Sorry for the confusion but everything feels this is better with the long weekend and Mathlete Athlete Day being this Friday.  May 17th students are welcome to dress up and participate.  Students can also bring a can of food or a small donation to watch the movie 'Trolls' at lunch.

Freezies will be sold tomorrow at lunch. $1 for half/$2.00 for a full one (these are very large though). - we talked in class about Foods to Limit and freezies are on that list so we discussed how 1/2 might be better.

There is no school on Tuesday, May 21 due to a school Pro D Day.

Our spelling is a review unit so it will be over 2 weeks.  Just a reminder another way to practice is to go to Spelling City on the blog to practice Lesson 12.

Our butterflies have started emerging so Div. 9 is very excited!

Div. 9 did amazing today at cross country!

May 2/19

Wow, I can't believe it is already May!

Div. 9 went and saw the results of our (plus several other divisions) planting in the fall!  The front of Fairview looks beautiful with all the colourful flowers.

Our Body Presentation and Student Star assembly is on Monday, May 6th at 8:45.  Please have your child practice their songs, they should have these memorized.  They are sounding good but extra practice is important so they are ready for Monday morning.

Me-N-Ed's is next Wednesday, May 8th.  Everyone that has agreed to drive, we do need you, thanks so much for volunteering.  Mrs. Roberts went on this field trip on Wednesday and they reported back that it was excellent!

Friday, May 17th the leadership group is putting on a Food Drive/Movie at lunch.  Students that would like to see the movie can bring in a non-perishable food donation or a cash donation (25 cents or more).

Mystery Bags have been changed, however, if all 5 books were not in the bag your child will not get a new bag until this is done.   Please look for any classroom books as we definitely seem to be missing some books.

Dr. Saul has been doing some dancing with the students and Div. 9 is loving it as you can see!!

April 26th

No School Monday, April 29th due to a Pro D day.

Division 9 was very fortunate to have Dr. Schnellert come to our class on Tuesday.  He was impressed by your children and helped me present an interesting lesson about an aboriginal girl who had to go to a residential school.  The students were able to come up with colours, symbols and images that reflected the feelings and connections they made to this book.

ME-N-ED's field trip is re-scheduled for Wednesday, May 8th.  You need to sign up again on the portal - please do this asap!  I hope to finalize our drivers by the end of next week.  Thanks to those who have already signed up and/or told me they are available to drive.

Div. 9 & 10 will be presenting their body songs at the assembly on Monday, May 6th at 8:45.  Please have your child practice and memorize these songs.  Thanks for your help.  Hopefully some of you will be able to come to watch this assembly.  I will try to video tape it for those of you that can't make it.

We will be changing our mystery bags next week so please be sure your child has them in their bag each day.  Thanks.

Thank you for paying for your child's memory book, I now have all the money in.  If anyone is doing any spring cleaning could you please keep your eyes open for any classroom books, returning any that you find.  Thanks!

Wednesday, April 17, 2019

Tomorrow is going to be a busy day!  It is Crazy Hair Day and frozen yogurt is also on sale for $2.00 at lunch.  Our leadership group is also asking for Moosehead Donations.  This is for a great cause helping women and children in need.   We are dying Easter eggs with our big buddies tomorrow and will also be doing a special mapping Easter egg hunt in the afternoon.

If anyone else is interested in placing a Scholastic order please do so by tomorrow or let me know that you want to order but just haven't had a chance. I have reminded the students of the coupon that I gave them at Christmas for a free book - you do need the code when placing the order.  Please use these by the end of June.

Poetry books should be at home for the long weekend. We are hoping that you can practice the body poems that are starred.  We will be presenting these at the assembly on Monday, May 6th at 8:45.

Our field trip to Me-N-Eds next Wednesday should be up on the portal tonight or tomorrow (just waiting for Mrs. Watkins to approve it).  Please sign up asap as there is very little turn-around and we do need parent drivers. Thanks

Please pay for memory books if you haven't already done so.

Hope you all have a great long Easter weekend with family and friends.

Save-On-Foods  field trip was great!  I am always amazed that everyone time I go on this field trip I learn something new.  Thanks to Ava, Rhys, Kamryn and Colton's moms for volunteering their time and helping us map our way to Save-On.  After we got back we brainstormed what we saw, learned and liked and the mapping activity was one of the highlights!

UPCOMING EVENTS:
Field trip to Me-N-Ed's in Port Coquitlam is coming up very soon.  It is on Wednesday, April 24 in the morning.  We will need parent drivers but I do not have the exact times so unfortunately can not put it up on the portal yet.  If you could just mark your calendars and let me know if you would be available to volunteer that would be appreciated.  As soon as I have the information I will put it up.

Crazy Hair Day is next Thursday, April 18th!

Also Div. 9 & 10 are planning to present our body songs at our next assembly, Monday, May 6th.  Parents are welcome and encouraged to attend!  Please practice the body songs that are in the Poetry book as we hope to have these memorized for this presentation.  Thanks.

***Please look at home for the Robert Munsch book 'Moving Day'.  It has gone missing.  Please also send back any extra classroom books you find at home.

Please check the portal for our Memory Book, you can either pay online or send in the $10.

Mystery Bags went home today.  Each student has a bag with 5 books inside of varying levels, both fiction and non-fiction.  These are high interest books that were provided by our district and the students loved them last year!  If your child is an emergent reader and you would like to continue with some levelled books as well please just email me at Sheralyn_rowledge@sd42.ca   Raz-Kids is also a great option for the children to access books at their reading level. As I mentioned earlier it is crucial for students to continue to read regularly to further strengthen their reading skills.  Just a reminder as well of our IXL program - a great place to practice and review math skills.  This is a great resource which unfortunately we are not using enough!  Remember these can be accessed by the link on this blog.

Hi Everyone,

Just a reminder that tomorrow students will be dismissed at 11:00 am so that teachers can conference for the afternoon and all day Friday.  Please double check your conference time via the portal.  The time you signed up for is the time you will arrive here to meet with your child in the hallway for 15 minutes and celebrate their learning.  This will be followed by a 15 minute meeting in the classroom for all of us to review the past term and set goals for the third term.

The students have all received their new JRR books yesterday.  They will also bring home their Poetry and More duotangs tomorrow and I have updated the levels on RAZ kids where necessary.  This will give your child  plenty of reading options for over the break.  Please also remember that we have a subscription with IXL which can be used to practice/develop math skills.

March 8/19

Our field trip to the ACT on Wednesday was great.  A huge thanks to Kamryn, Hallie and Libby's moms for driving as well as OSS for providing a van!  Ideas Bobert was very good!  Ask your child for details such as... what was your favourite part, funniest part, how did she make her bird move,  what is the difference between clowning and acting?  What made Bobert and the bird happy?  What was the message Ideas Bobert was portraying?  At Buddies on Thursday we discussed what made their hearts smile plus made symbols out of plasticine.  We had music notes, birds, footballs, dance shoes, video game, book, etc.

Club RED celebration was today.  It was exciting that Mrs. Neufeld was our guest reader and it was fun to read with Mrs. Williamson's class especially while eating twirlers!

Conferences are next Thursday afternoon and Friday.  Please sign up on the portal asap!  Remember the conference is a total of 30 minutes - arrive for the time you signed up, the first 15 minutes is in the hall going through and celebrating your child's learning and then the next 15 we will meet in the classroom to go over the report card and set goals for our last term.  If possible, Mrs. Mungaroo would like the opportunity to sit in on some of the conferences, if you are uncomfortable with this please just email me before the conference (no problem either way). ***Please note it is an 11:00 dismissal on Thursday and no school on Friday due to these conferences.

Upcoming field trips after spring break are...
Save On Foods - April 9th (this is a walking field trip and if possible we will need a few parents to join us).  We also have one to Me n Eds Pizza (drivers needed) on April 24th.

Tuesday, March 12 students are welcome to wear green in celebration of St. Patrick's Day which occurs over spring break.

I have updated the reading levels on RAZ kids, please do not be concerned if the letter did not change as some represent up to 4-5 levels.

Have a wonderful weekend!

Spelling next week is a review of all the short vowels. We will do this unit over two weeks so they will do 1/2 the words this week and then the rest the next.  They won't bring it home until next week if they are not done.  For extra practice please check out Spelling City on the blog - lesson 6 (we did it today in the computer lab).

Just a reminder of all the information I sent in my email last Thursday  - please see below!  Thanks to Stephen and Kamryn's moms for volunteering to make cupcakes for 100 Day!!
Dear Parents,
Just wanted to let you all know the upcoming events that will be here before we know it!  Tuesday, Feb. 26th is Grandparent Day in the afternoon. Please send out invitations to your parents so they can be part of this special afternoon (if your child doesn't have grandparents but do have an aunt or uncle or special friend they are more than welcome).  I will be buddying up students that don't have someone and have found grandparents are great at welcoming other children.   It is also our 100 Day celebration!    Don't forget that students are also suppose to make a collection or project of 100 things (if you need paper - please let me know).  They can bring them in anytime next week or before the 26th.  Below is the schedule for the afternoon that grandparents will be at Fairview.
1230 Grandparents arrive to the gym……. Coffee, sandwiches and cookies will be served.

We also just confirmed a play at the ACT for Wednesday, March 6th at 9:30 as part of our connection unit. Our student teachers will be back with us so they will be helping to organize this, so I apologize the portal announcement won't be out until the last week of February.  We will be needing parent drivers though so please mark your calendars with this date.

Please remember that it is Club RED month and hopefully your child is reading every day, they are colouring and you are initialling their special heart calendar. Also be thinking of what they could dress up for their favourite book character on the celebration March 8th!  They could also choose to wear something red!

Feb. 13/19

With the snow we had math outside on Monday, we measured the snow - the temperature and then had a competition of the tallest snow structure.

Flashlight reading was a big success!  We were excited to read with Mrs. O'Riodan's kindergartens.

Thanks to Zach, Hallie, Janelle and Summer for providing all the goodies and to everyone for helping their child get their valentines ready.  It is an exciting day for children and I was proud of how they were all thankful!

Hopefully everyone is starting to think about their 100 Day projects.  You can send them in anytime next week but for sure by Feb. 26th.

Skating on Thursday, Feb. 28th is now up on the portal please sign up and send in the money for rentals.

Happy Valentines and Family Day!!  Hope you all enjoy a wonderful long weekend.  Remember that there is no school for students on Thursday, Friday or Monday.

Feb. 8/19

Tomorrow is Flashlight reading.  Please remember to bring in a flashlight and a special book.  We will be reading with Mrs. O'Riordan's kindergarten class!   Leadership students have started 'Popcorn Sales'  every Friday.  Bags of popcorn will be sold for $1.00 Fridays at lunch and this will be starting tomorrow.

Hopefully all students in Div. 9 are reading every day and remembering to get you to sign their heart calendar for Club RED.

Some of you may have already met Kaila Mungaroo.  She is a student teacher from SFU who will be working in Div. 9!  She is observing this week and then back at SFU for two weeks but will then be back and spending several weeks in our classroom over the next couple of months. Please drop in and say hello - we are excited Mrs. Mungaroo is joining our class!

Valentine's is next week, below is a list of all the students.   Please ensure if your child is handing out valentines that they make one for every member of the class so that no one feels left out.  Thanks!

February 1st

Wow it is already February!!  This is always a very busy month.

Science World was a big success!  Thanks to everyone who joined us for Science World, we really appreciate your time and wouldn't be able to take these trips without your help.   Everyone seemed to have a great day as you can see from these photos.  Parents if you have some great pictures of our adventures at Science World please send them to me.  Thanks!

Club RED information came home on Wednesday. The goal is for students to READ EVERY DAY in the month of February (although you do have 5 free spaces if needed as we realize that life gets busy).  Please keep your calendar visible and parents should initial the date each day your child reads.

Valentine's is just around the corner and I know some families like to start their valentines early so below is a list of all the students.   Please ensure if your child is handing out valentines that they make one for every member of the class so that no one feels left out.  Thanks!

We started our new unit on the body and nutrition.  If any of you work in these fields and would like to come and talk to the students please contact me and we will make the arrangements.

For extra fun spelling practice students can go to the Spelling City link on this blog (they are organized into lessons, but if your child has yellow sheets they say purple as that was the colour it was last year).  A great way to practice these phonetic patterns and even little spelling tests.

Candy grams went home on Friday.  Please return by Feb. 10th.

I have updated the blog's calendar for February.

Next Friday is flashlight reading.  Students should bring flashlights from home to read in the dark with different buddies in the school.  Pajama Day and hallway reading was lots of fun today!
